Concussion is an injury to the brain which can present with multiple symptoms of varying intensities and durations. It can be caused by direct trauma to the head or through the transference of force to the brain through an impact to the body causing a sudden acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull. Common symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, balance, behavioral and emotional issues as well as affect the brain’s ability to process information correctly and efficiently. The majority of symptoms resolve quickly but can often be prolonged in around 20% of cases. This reinforces the need for timely assessment and management. Concussion is not easily diagnosed and at present there are no scans or one off tests valid for such a diagnosis. Therefore a systematic and holistic management approach conducted by individuals who are experienced in dealing with such injuries is vital for optimal care.
The prominence of concussion within the media has increased awareness and concern about both its short and long-term effects on the brain; it has however highlighted the importance of appropriate assessment and management of head injuries. The injury can be a stressful and worrying period. At Yorkshire Concussion Clinic we can guide you through your recovery from start to finish allowing you to focus on getting yourself back to your activities as safely as possible.
